Home haemodialysis is a different way of receiving haemodialysis. Instead of going to a dialysis centre 3 times a week for sessions, home haemodialysis offers the convenience of treatment in the comfort of your own home.

More frequent haemodialysis treatments are generally shorter than those performed at a haemodialysis centre, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours. However, many people on more frequent haemodialysis perform their treatments more often than those attending a haemodialysis centre, with sessions typically taking place 5 or 6 days a week in the home.

With more frequent haemodialysis, fluctuations in toxin and water build-up between treatments are decreased, which may reduce some of the side effects that people receiving less frequent dialysis may experience.

Home haemodialysis treatments, may also provide quality of life benefits such as:

  • Taking control of when, where, and how long you dialyse*
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to maintain a normal work schedule or go back to work

*You and your health care team or doctor will determine the frequency and durations of your treatments. Work with your health care team or doctor to select the schedule that works best for you.

"Home dialysis was right for me! Everyone is different. I have young kids so I’m home more and I love to travel. There is a risk in everything but life is short, so enjoy your time away from the in-centre unit. Live strong and ride hard!"
